A glass coating changes how water behaves on your windshield. Instead of spreading into a sheet you have to wipe, rain forms beads that blow off as you drive, which makes it easier to see in a storm, especially at highway speeds and at night.
It also helps in winter: slush, salt spray and road film have a harder time sticking, so the glass is easier to clear and clean. We clean the windshield first so the coating bonds to bare glass, then apply it. It is one of the quickest ways to make daily driving a little safer.
On bare glass, rain spreads into a sheet you have to wipe. On coated glass it forms beads that the wind pushes off.
Water beads and blows off at speed, so you rely less on the wipers.
Ice, slush and salt film have a harder time bonding to the glass.
Less smearing means less glare from oncoming lights, and bugs and road film wipe off easily.
